Emergency braking
In an emergency, brake firmly and keep steering. On a vehicle without ABS, threshold braking - hard, just short of locking the wheels - stops in the shortest distance; locked wheels skid and cannot be steered.
On a motorcycle, use both brakes together, front and rear. Grabbing the front alone can tuck the front wheel; using only the rear lengthens the stop considerably.
Do not use the hand brake to stop at speed: it acts on the rear wheels alone and invites a spin.
If a skid starts, come off the brake, look where you want to go and steer there gently.
