Breakdowns
Get the vehicle off the carriageway if you can, switch on the hazard lights and place a warning triangle or a marker behind it - far enough back that a driver has time to react.
Get the passengers out on the side away from traffic and behind a barrier where one exists. Standing beside a broken-down vehicle on a live road is more dangerous than the breakdown.
If the brakes fail on a descent, change down through the gears, use the handbrake progressively rather than fully, sound the horn and steer for anything that will slow you - a rising slope or a soft verge - rather than a drop.
If a tyre bursts, hold the wheel firmly, do not brake hard, and let the vehicle slow before pulling off.
